The site and massing goals of the project delivered placemaking at multiple levels on a constrained 0.43-acre, 150-foot x 123-foot site. The recuperative care facility occupies the first three floors, and a slender 98-unit apartment tower is built on the upper six levels. Image Credit: Christopher Carvell Architects, Inc.

The detailed curtain wall and canopy at the main entry create an attractive and welcoming presence on California Street. The building's innovative design incorporated vertical stacks on the tight urban infill site, and used a cutting-edge, recycled steel prefabricated framing system. Looking south at the main entry and the California Streetscape, the building has provided a 45-foot-high, three-story façade transition that serves to express the recuperative care and assisted living environments on levels two and three, and visually relates to the adjacent, two-story Mercury Cafe on the corner of 22nd & California.
